Protecting Your Plumbing in Extreme Cold
Calgary's winters regularly bring temperatures below -20°C, creating real risks for your home's plumbing. Frozen pipes can burst, causing thousands of dollars in water damage.
Prevention Tips
- Keep indoor temperature at least 15°C, even when away
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
- Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas
- Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses before winter
- Know where your main water shut-off is located
If Pipes Freeze
If you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out during cold weather, you may have frozen pipes. Never use open flame to thaw pipes. Call a professional for assistance.
